Updated, science based management strategies for Parkinson's

New, non-pharmaceutical approaches to Parkinson's disease management

We will be offering remote consultations from November 2025

Treatment approaches

Our treatment approaches are for Parkinson’s sufferers who would like to achieve improved management of their already diagnosed condition.

We view our role as that of a qualified ‘guide’ in collating, informing and providing treatment approaches that support the latest science on Parkinson’s management.

Described by world leading researcher Bas Bloem from the Netherlands as the fastest growing neurological disease on the planet, an increasing number of neurologists are stepping outside mainstream thinking and considering other approaches that have the potential to modify not only the motor symptoms (which are helped by the drugs), but also the non motor symptoms (which aren’t).

Paul Brunton runs a home based clinic based in North Canterbury and is able to see a limited number of patients.  Alternatively he offers virtual consultations for Parkinson’s.

What to expect in your consultation/s & treatment

1.

We begin by asking you to complete the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale questionnaire (UPDRS), so we can assess your needs and measure changes.  We suggest at this time you get your homocysteine level checked (via blood test) as this is an important factor in relation to inflammation in PD.

2.

We can then determine the best treatment for you, using one or a number of the following:

  1. Using nutraceuticals to lower homocysteine (toxic amino acid) levels.
  2. Establishing your individual thiamine dosage ‘sweet spot’  to overcome any metabolic roadblocks in the energy producing parts of the mitochondria.  We can recommend a low cost book to empower your own management of Parkinson’s using thiamine.
  3. Using photobiomodulation on the gut to positively affect your microbiome.  We now understand that the Parkinson’s gut has an unfavourable balance of good and bad bacteria.
  4. Identify and structure exercises to improve balance disorders.
  5. Review existing diet and lifestyle choices and provide recommendations based on the latest studies which can positively influence wellness.

Some Parkinson’s improvement statistics

%

20-30%

Inflammation:

Nutriceuticals lower the toxic and inflammatory amino acid homocysteine (HCY) by 20-30%.

HCY has links to dementia. It is higher in untreated people with Parkinson’s and higher again with dopamine therapy. (Christine 2018, Froese 2019, Ahiskog 2023 + others).

%

40%

Thiamine:

40% of study participants reported significant improvement in motor function and cognitive performance in the study “Thiamine as a potential therapy for PD” (Dr Costantini 2020).

%

40-70%

PBM:

Photobiomodulation improves motor symptoms, gait, balance, fine motor skills and cognition – to varying degrees, up to 70% (Zhang, 2022, Tian, 2022, Ugarte, 2018, Liebert, 2022, 2023 and Bicknell, 2020).

Up to 90%

Exercise:

A variety of exercise and balance interventions can benefit up to 90% of people with Parkinsons, including cognition improvement.

90 mins per week provides the equivalent benefit of a drug.(Prof Bas Bloem August 2024 – NZ Parkinsons Conference).

%

50-70%

Diet & Lifestyle:

A keto diet – improves motor function in 50-70% of patients (Santos, 2020) and cognition by 30-50% (Paoli, 2019). And further, most importantly improves non motor symptoms (Phillipps, 2018).

Further information about photobiomodulation

Photobiomodulation (aka Low Level Laser, Cold Laser or Light Therapy), improves cellular health so the body can heal. The treatment is non-invasive and drug free. There are no side-effects and it’s painless to receive, so patients of all ages are able to be treated for conditions such as Parkinson’s, Migraine, Depression and Traumatic Brain Injury (also commonly used for musculo-skeletal conditions).

When certain wavelengths of light and certain doses are applied, the light is absorbed and converted into energy. As that energy (ATP) is restored to the cell, oxidative stress is reduced and this stimulates the body’s healing response. The scientific mechanism by which this works is well understood and documented.

With over 6ooo thousand research studies published (in 2018 – one every 37 hours), this treatment is at the cutting edge of conventional therapies. The Thor unit, which we use at Bioelectronic Medicine, is the best available. Please watch the video for a deeper explanation.
